Tips for Finding Good Indie Music

In the entertainment world there are many popular artists promoted by big music companies. Everywhere you look you can’t help but see advertisements for the latest album releases. The most popular of these artists appear regularly in tabloids and celebrity magazines. While the media bombards us with the latest on these performers there are also lots of talented independent artists that fall below the radar. And many of these performers are just as talented as the more popular ones. So how do you find good music from independent artists? Here are a few ideas:

1. Ask friends for recommendations. If you have friends with similar tastes in music, ask them to tell you about some lesser known artists they know and like. If they don?t know you?re interested in new music, they just might keep their good find to themselves. You may be pleasantly surprised with the recommendations they make.

2. Search Youtube for artists. If you can sift through the thousands of videos on Youtube, you can find some quality artists that share their work via this popular site. Some offer video performances of their latest concerts or snippets of song they’re working on at home or in the studio. If you look at their profile, they may have a link to take you to their Web site where you can find more of their work. They may even have a CD you can purchase.

3. Search through Myspace music. Everyone nowadays has their own Myspace page and independent artists are no exception. Some are looking to get discovered and others just want to share their work with anyone who will listen. Because this site generates so much traffic this is one of the best avenues for artists to share their work. You can listen to clips of songs, send messages to these artists and look for tour dates. You may even become a fan.

4. Check out local performance spaces. There may be a singer or group in your area offering a musical sound that suits your tastes. By visiting local performance venues such as clubs, halls and restaurants, you’ll find some of the best talent in your area. Depending on your area there may be many places that host live music regularly. You may even catch a few shows from visiting acts. The best thing about this is you’ll enjoy the pureness of live music.

5. Go to concerts. You?re more likely to attend a concert to see a big performance act, but opening acts feature more localized talent. These acts may have not hit mainstream yet, but many are very talented.

6. Visit record shops. Find a quaint record store and ask the people working there to recommend independent artists in your genre of choice. Some stores allow artists to post and leave flyers announcing album releases and concerts.

7. Read independent music magazines. You won?t get to hear the music right away doing this, but you?ll learn enough about an artist?s or group?s sound to know if you?re interested in listening to their work.
